  7.                The severity of a burn depends upon its size, depth
  8.                and location. Burns are most severe when located on
  9.                the face, neck, hands, feet and genitals; when they
  10.                are spread over large parts of the body or when they
  11.                are combined with other injuries.
  12.

  14.                Burns result in pain, infection and shock. They are
  15.                most serious when the victims are very young or very
  16.                old.

  19.                First degree burns are the least severe. They are
  20.                characterized by redness or discoloration, mild
  21.                swelling and pain. Overexposure to the sun is a
  22.                common cause of first degree burns.

  25.                Second degree burns are more serious. They are
  26.                deeper than first degree burns, look red or mottled
  27.                and have blisters. They may also involve loss of
  28.                fluids through the damaged skin. Second degree
  29.                burns are usually the most painful because nerve
  30.                ending are usually intact, despite severe tissue
  31.                damage.

  34.                Third degree burns are the deepest. They may look
  35.                white or charred, extend through all skin layers.
  36.                Victims of third degree burns may have severe pain
  37.                -- or no pain at all if the nerve endings are
  38.                destroyed.

  61.                Burns may also be caused by chemicals. In these
  62.                cases, it is important to remove clothing on which
  63.                chemicals have spilled and flush the affected area
  64.                with copious amounts of water for 15 to 30 minutes.
